Tons of toads!

Dear Noah,

A friend and I were walking on a trail through the woods the other day and we saw little critters hopping across the trail.  At first they looked like insects, but when we looked more closely we realized they were toads.  Tons of toads in the road!  I guess they all hatched about the same time - they were everywhere!  And so tiny - look at this picture!  If you would have been with me we would have picked up a bunch and put them in your pocket so you could show your mom :-)

Do you know the difference between a frog and a toad?

Love you!

  1. Dear Nanny,

My momma and I looked up the difference between frogs and toads. I like frogs more because they are slimy instead of warty. Did those toads have warts?

    Love, Noah

  2. These toads did have warts! Or at least they had bumpy spots that look like warts, though they are not really. Did you know that both frogs and toads start out life as fish? They hatch from eggs into tadpoles, which breathe with gills like fish. And they eventually they grow legs and lungs and learn to breathe air and leave the water. Frogs usually stay near water, but toads live on land. I had a pet toad when I was little. I fed him meal worms. Did you know that toads will pee on you if you pick them up? It's because they are scared...they pee on you so you will let go of them! Sometimes it works!
